SAN FRANCISCO'S SPECTACULAR WATERFRONT IS THREATENED BY A PROPOSED 170-UNIT LUXURY CONDOMINIUM PROJECT

Reasons

There are compelling reasons to oppose the 8 Washinton project:

Destruction of Recreation Center:
The project requires the destruction of the Golden Gateway Tennis & Swim Club, which provides the only outdoor recreational venue in this part of San Francisco. GGTSC, a community recreational center which was a formal part of the original planned community known as the Golden Gateway, operates as no cost to the city.
Opposed by Majority of Neighborhood
Residents:
The project as it exists is opposed by a substantial majority of neighborhood residents. A recent survey of neighborhood residents found that 65%of residents strongly oppose the current plan and another 14% are somewhat opposed.
Sets a Bad Example:
8 Washington will set a precedent for increased building heights along the Embarcadero. While “building up” is the new mantra for some civic planners, the vertical city is not a concept San Franciscans universally embrace. If 8 Washington is approved and built as proposed, those who approve it must acknowledge their role in forever changing the streetscape along this magnificent waterfront.
Disrespects Surrounding Natural
Topography:
The project’s proposed height flies in the face of Design Principle 2 of the Northeast Embarcadero Study, which mandates that developers respect the surrounding natural topography when considering building heights. In the case of 8 Washington, the iconic view of Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower would be obliterated along a major part of The Embarcadero, which is heavily used by visitors and locals alike.
Not Build for Need:
8 Washington calls for 170 luxury condominium units. As things stand, the city doesn’t need an additional 170 units of luxury condominiums. What it does need is housing that’s affordable for the average working San Franciscan.
Violation of Proposition K
The proposed development as proposed would cast new shadow on Sue Bierman (Ferry) Park in violation of voter approved Proposition K.
Exacerbate Problematic Traffic Situation:
The project, along with others currently proposed, will exacerbate an already problematic traffic situation along the Embarcadero.
