Re: Proposed 8-Story, 170-unit luxury condominium project at 8 Washington Street
I oppose the proposed condominium project at 8 Washington Street for the following reasons:
The height and massing of the proposed 8-story luxury condo development at 8 Washington Street is overwhelming at the very edge of The Embarcadero and immediately adjacent to Sue Bierman (Ferry) Park.
The project requires the destruction of the Golden Gateway Tennis and Swim Club which provides the only outdoor recreational venue in this part of San Francisco, serving not only residents of the nearby Golden Gateway Commons, many of them seniors, but all San Franciscans. GGTSC, a community recreational center which was a formal part of the original planned community known as the Golden Gateway, operates at no cost to the city.
The project would diminish the pedestrian experience along the Embarcadero by blocking the view of Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower, thereby denying tourists and locals alike one of the city’s iconic views.
The project, and others like it, would exacerbate an already problematic traffic situation along the Embarcadero.
The project, as proposed, would cast additional shadow on Sue Bierman (Ferry) Park in violation of Proposition K (the Shadow Ban Ordinance).
The City’s failure to create a unified plan for protecting the historic and aesthetic integrity of the Northeast Waterfront will lead to further piecemeal approval of incompatible projects such as this one, forever altering the appearance of one of the world’s spectacular urban waterfronts.
